Former Green Bay Packers’ cornerback Kevin King is reportedly sitting out the 2022 NFL season to get healthy, according to PFF.

King was drafted with the 33rd overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and played in 51 career games for Green Bay. At 6-foot-3, he had the size and athleticism the Packers coveted and appeared to have the speed and physical traits to match. On paper, he was a great cornerback.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to put it together on the field. Injuries were his biggest concern, as he never played an entire season. He missed 29 of a possible 80 career regular season games due to injury.

Former Green Bay Packers’ cornerback Kevin King is reportedly skipping the 2022 NFL season to get healthy for next year.

The injury concerns and potential caused Green Bay to re-sign him to only a one-year, $5 million contract in 2021. After he missed another six games that season, and due to the emergence of Eric Stokes and Rasul Douglas, the Packers decided to move on from him in the offseason.

Unfortunately for King, he didn’t sign on with another team.

It’s now clear why that was. King told PFF he turned down contract offers because he wants to take the season off to get healthy. The injuries he’s battled throughout his career include concussions, hip, knee, back, shoulder, groin, hamstring and quadriceps.

At just 27 years old, it appears he’s taking a long-term approach to both his football career and life. That’s probably a smart strategy considering he’ll have the rest of his life once football is over and the quality (or lack of pain) should also be considered.

When King does return to the field, he should have several interested suitors. Although his time has expired in Green Bay, he still brings intriguing potential to the cornerback position if he can ever figure it all out and stay healthy at the same time. He’s flashed potential throughout his career and still possesses the physical attributes that made him worthy of a second-round pick in the first place. We wish him all the best of luck on his way to a solid recovery.
