The Green Bay Packers could miss their top wide receiver for Week 1, as Allen Lazard has missed two practices this week with an ankle injury.

There haven’t been any details shared about the significance and all we know is he was the lone Packer to miss practice on Wednesday. That doesn’t bode well for a team who lost Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the offseason and could now be without their top guy.

If Lazard is forced to miss time, Green Bay desperately needs these three players to step up in his absence.

If Green Bay Packers’ top wide receiver Allen Lazard is forced to miss time due to an injury, these three players would need to step up.

Robert Tonyan

Robert Tonyan was listed as a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, but he’ll be counted on when he returns. Tonyan had a breakout 2020 campaign before he got off to a slow start in 2021. Right when he was heating up, he went down with an injury and has been forced to work a recovery plan ever since.

The Packers won’t rush him back so when he does return to the field he’ll need to pick up where he left off in 2020. He’s a big body and a trusted red zone threat for Aaron Rodgers. He can also run a bit when matched up with slower linebackers. Tonyan will need to produce for the offense this season–with or without Lazard.

AJ Dillon

The Packers are probably going to slow down the pace even more this season and rely on their running game more than ever before. Aaron Jones is in one of his last peak years as a running back, so AJ Dillon must take his game to the next level.

Dillon showed he was ready for more playing time last year and another jump would be much appreciated. He has the size-speed combination to make an impact in between the tackles and outside. It’s time he brings those Quads to life.

Sammy Watkins

Sammy Watkins is the most veteran receiver on the roster and needs to live up to the hype of his first-round status. He feels better than ever before and the Packers were extremely cautious by holding him out of all three preseason games. He needs to repay that faith and show out in the regular season.
