Packers valued own draft picks too much

Some of the biggest surprises on the Packers’ roster came when Gutekunst chose to keep his own draft picks over other players.

At wide receiver, they kept Samori Toure over Juwann Winfree. Toure flashed potential in the third preseason game and has a higher ceiling than Winfree. However, the latter has Aaron Rodgers’ trust and was much more consistent. They also kept Jonathan Ford over Jack Heflin–a move nobody saw coming–and Rasheed Walker over Caleb Jones.

Fortunately, they could get all three players onto their practice squad for now and didn’t lose any of them. However, those were three of the most shocking moves and all included someone Gutekunst drafted vs undrafted free agents.
