Packers’ roster deadline guide: Dates, practice squad rules, waiver process
One of the most important (and most difficult) NFL days is upon us: The 2022 NFL final roster deadline. The Green Bay Packers have already begun the process and will finalize it later today.
If you want to keep up with whom the Packers release you can follow along here and if you’re interested in seeing who else is available on the market click here.
All of this is happening so fast and can be very confusing. That’s why we put together a roster deadline guide with everything you need to know about how this process works.
Here is an overview of the deadlines, practice squad rules, and everything you need to know about the Green Bay Packers’ final roster cuts.
Tuesday, August 30th at 3 p.m. CT:
The Packers and the rest of the NFL must reduce their roster to 53 players. This is the biggest round of cuts after Green Bay trimmed down by five the past two Tuesdays. This is the first step to finalizing the initial 53-man roster.
Wednesday, August 31st at 11 a.m. CT:
After players are released, other teams can put waiver claims on players and add them to their roster after they are released. If a claim is made, a team must ensure they have the roster spot to add them. Green Bay will find out if they are awarded any of their claims by 11 a.m. (if they made any). It’s important to note last year’s standings determine waiver wire priority.
Wednesday, August 31st at 3 p.m. CT:
If a player is going onto the injured reserve and will miss the entire season, they must be placed on the list by this deadline. That will free up roster spots for Green Bay. However, if a player is going on injured reserve with the possibility of returning after four games, they must be added to this list AFTER the deadline.
Practice Squad
General manager Brian Gutekunst often refers to it as a 69-man roster (the 53-man roster plus the 16-man practice squad). That means we should give equal attention to this part of Green Bay’s team.
After the rosters are finalized, the Packers will quickly assemble their 16-man practice squad. Anyone is eligible for the practice squad, however, the NFL limits the number of players you can have with a certain amount of experience. For example, you can only have six players with three or more years of NFL experience on your practice squad, 10 players with two or less, and 16 players with no experience or fewer than nine active games last year.
There will surely be some curveballs thrown by the Packers and other teams across the NFL. Make sure to follow along at Dairyland Express so you’re the best type of fan: an informed one.
