10 Questions about Green Bay Packers roster before final cutdowns
By Paul Bretl
Who earns the final roster spot as the Green Bay Packers’ fourth safety?
There will likely be some maneuvering at the safety position as the Packers initially roster Dallin Leavitt to then move him to IR, which would open up a roster spot. This could result in the Packers cutting Micah Abernathy and Tariq Carpenter right away, with the plan to then elevate one of them once that transaction with Leavitt is complete.
Abernathy has put together a strong resume this preseason, being very active on special teams, as well as a tackler on defense, and even came away with an interception against New Orleans along with nearly having another in Kansas City.
For Carpenter, it was a quieter summer, but he really shined in that final game, flying around the field and showcasing his sound tackling ability. He does, however, look more like a linebacker than a safety, which has shown up in coverage.
Did Jack Coco do enough to earn a roster spot?
Brian Gutekunst told us weeks ago that Jack Coco was also competing with long-snappers outside of the organization. Not long after, we then saw the Green Bay Packers have in two long-snappers for workouts, and it’s worth keeping an eye on Cincinnati, who currently has two long-snappers on the roster.
But Coco performed well this preseason — even on punts where he had no collegiate experience — despite the up-and-down start through the first two weeks of practice. Did he do enough to earn a roster spot? Or do the Packers plan to look elsewhere?
