Juwann Winfree, Samori Toure, or both at the Green Bay Packers WR position?

The Packers have never rostered a seventh receiver on the initial 53-man under Matt LaFleur, but that seems like a given this year. The question is whether or not it will be Juwann Winfree, Samori Toure, or could the Packers keep eight wide receivers?

As I wrote in my final roster prediction, I went with Winfree over Toure because of his steadiness. While Toure certainly flashed in the final preseason game, Winfree has been a reliable presence all summer, and that means a lot to Aaron Rodgers, especially at a position with uncertainty. I imagine that’s also why Rodgers has been very complimentary of Winfree.

Winfree is also the better run-blocker, which we know is important, and he’s been a starter on both punt and kick return units for special teams as well as the punt coverage team. Toure does bring special teams experience from his time in college, but he hasn’t consistently worked with the starters.

If the Packers cut Toure, they’ll have to weigh whether or not they feel Toure will make it to the practice squad or be claimed by another team and added to their roster. This is what could lead Green Bay to consider rostering eight receivers, but that, of course, takes away from other positions on the roster.
