Green Bay Packers WR Danny Davis

Danny Davis has had a nice starting to training camp, with Andy Herman of Packer Report saying that he has “acclimated himself nicely” by making consistent plays.

Then against San Francisco, in the Packers’ first preseason game, we saw Davis build upon that performance.

Davis had two receptions for 34-yards on his two targets. One went for 12 yards and set up a third and short opportunity for the offense. The other was a 22-yard catch and run for six.

This is a crowded wide receiver room, even with the unknowns that surround it, so Davis making the 53-man roster likely isn’t in play. However, while things can still change, he has positioned himself very well to make the Packers’ practice squad.

Other Notable Performances

-A slimmed-down Amari Rodgers showed impressive speed on his 22-yard catch and run as well as on his 50-yard kick return. In a crowded receiver room, Rodgers can be forgotten about, but he can fill several roles on this team.

Josiah Deguara is entering his third NFL, and really his second in terms of playing time after he missed just about all of his rookie season with an ACL injury. Tight end is a position that often takes time for a player to truly make a steady impact, given all that is required to play it. Deguara, against the 49ers, had two receptions for 12 yards, was utilized both in-line as well as in the backfield, and was stout as a blocker.

-In addition to Jack Heflin making noise along the defensive front, so did Chris Slayton and TJ Slaton. According to PFF, Slaton had an impressive pass rush win rate of over 36%.

-At least upon the initial viewing, there didn’t seem to be any issues from Jack Coco as the long-snapper. He may be the only long-snapper on the roster currently, but I wouldn’t consider him a roster lock either. Green Bay has already had a few other long-snappers in for workouts.

Zach Tom wasn’t with the starting offensive line unit, which had its issues with run-blocking, but he did take over at right tackle with Royce Newman then sliding to right guard. I thought this was the Packers’ most effective offensive line combination on Friday night.

Romeo Doubs continued to make plays and did so from both the boundary and the slot while also making catches at all three levels of the field. This versatility will give Matt LaFleur added flexibility with his play calling. However, Doubs did have two drops.
