It’s becoming increasingly possible that the long-snapper who will start the season for the Green Bay Packers isn’t currently on the roster.

Incumbent Steven Wirtel and newcomer Jack Coco are the two on the roster as of now, but their performances have been far from impressive. Each player has struggled throughout training camp, sparking Green Bay to work out eight specialists that included a few long-snappers in that group.

With the Packers attempting a complete makeover of their special teams’ units, the long-snapper position is at the center of many of their past issues. Here are three free-agent long-snappers Green Bay should take a close look at.

The Green Bay Packers are in a tough spot at long-snapper and should take a long, hard look at these three free agent options.

Kameron Canaday

Kameron Canaday is fresh off a workout with the Denver Broncos and it would be worth Green Bay’s time to bring him in for one as well. He was the long-snapper for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2017-2020 before being out of a job last year. At just 28 years old, it’s worth checking whether he still has what it takes to snap at an NFL level.

Matt Overton

Possessing nearly a decade of long-snapping experience in the NFL, including a Pro Bowl appearance in 2013, Matt Overton has the most experience on this list. He played for the Los Angeles Charges just last season and could still have enough left in the tank at 37 years old to bridge the gap in Green Bay until they can find the long-snapper of the future. He also recently worked out with the Broncos so the clock is ticking.

Thomas Fletcher

Thomas Fletcher is the only player on this list without NFL experience, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less qualified. He was a sixth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2021, but missed his entire rookie season due to an injury. Carolina recently waived him because they needed depth at a few other positions where injuries have occurred. It’s worth looking at Fletcher and seeing if he still has the skills that made him worthy of a draft pick just a year and a half ago.
