Green Bay Packers football is nearly upon us! After what feels like a longer than normal offseason, football is getting closer and closer to returning.

The Packers’ rookies reported to the team on Friday, July 22nd and the veterans were set to arrive back in town on Tuesday, July 26th officially. Green Bay will have its sights set on returning the Lombardi Trophy to its rightful owner once again, but have a lot of work to do in the process.

They sport one of the best teams on paper at the top of their depth chart–a strength they’ll have to rely on throughout the gruesome and physical season. However, there are major concerns about their role players and backups, and key questions must be answered throughout training camp. To help us prepare, here are eight dates you should know before the regular season begins.

With the 2022 NFL season inching closer, here are eight important dates you should be aware of heading into the Green Bay Packers training camp.

July 27th: Packers kick-off training camp

Green Bay will officially begin training camp practices with all the players in town on July 27th. Three practices will be open to the public during this first week, allowing everyone to form immediate opinions about which players will succeed this year and which will struggle.

August 5th: Family Night at Lambeau Field

There used to be a time when Family Night was a true scrimmage between the offense and defense. However, now it’s more like a glorified practice that serves as a way for the Packers and the Green Bay community to bring in more money. You won’t hear me complaining as this is one of the best family events.

August 12th: First preseason game at San Francisco 49ers

August 16th: Must cut roster from 90 to 85

Sticking with roster changes made a few years ago, the NFL has two small cuts of five players each on August 16th and August 23rd, before teams must make the larger jump from 80 to 53 players for their initial roster. This is the preferred way for most teams and allows them to evaluate their players for longer.

August 16th-17th: Joint practices with New Orleans Saints

The two teams will hold joint practices together before their preseason game against the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field. Although they have spent the recent past sitting atop the NFC standings, the Saints are in a bit of a rebuild after Drew Brees retired in 2021. Still, expect things to get chippy from time to time.

August 19th: First preseason game at Lambeau Field vs Saints

August 23rd: Must cut roster from 85 to 80

August 30th: Must cut roster from 80 to 53

The final roster cut comes at the end of August and will give us a very good indication about who the Packers see as long-term assets to their team. Don’t expect that to be the final roster, however, as Green Bay will likely place several key players on the PUP list and will likely scour other teams for depth pieces at critical positions.
