11 Big Things to Watch for on Offense During Packers Training Camp
By Paul Bretl
What do we see from Jordan Love in Year 3 with the Green Bay Packers?
With only three quarterbacks on the roster and Aaron Rodgers not participating in the preseason, that means Jordan Love will be getting quite a few reps this summer–which, of course, is a good thing.
Even Brian Gutekunst alluded to Love’s future with the team being up in the air given Aaron Rodgers’ new deal and not knowing if he is going to play one more year or three more. However, we do know that Love is a Green Bay Packer for the 2022 season, and he will have his fair share of needed reps this summer.
Where Love’s game can continue to grow is with improving his footwork by remaining balanced and making sure his feet are moving with his eyes as he goes through his progressions–which will be another area of emphasis.
Improved footwork will lead to improved accuracy–another must for Love. His decision-making will have to get better as well, and as LaFleur mentioned previously, he wants to see Love “let it rip.” Now, this doesn’t mean he wants Love to be careless with the football, but rather being confident and trusting what he sees and then getting the ball out quickly to that target.
These are just a few things to keep your eyes on this summer with Love, but more reps will go a long way in helping him improve, simply by allowing him to be more comfortable and the game slowing down–which will make everything we just discussed a bit easier.
"“You can just tell in his body language,” Patrick Taylor said this summer via ESPN. “He just looks really relaxed. I noticed it from Day 1 of this offseason program and just speaking to him, it seems like he has a different mindset going into this season.”"
Does Tyler Davis live up to the hype?
From Brian Gutekunst, to Matt LaFleur, to Rich Bisaccia, no other Packer has been hyped up this offseason quite like tight end Tyler Davis.
Davis was a core special teams player in 2022, and in the midst of all the poor play, he is one player who stood out on tape when Bisaccia was watching. On offense, his playing time was limited, but he proved to be a willing blocker and flashed some playmaking ability as a pass catcher against Baltimore.
The Packers’ tight end room is fairly crowded with Robert Tonyan, Josiah Deguara, and Marcedes Lewis all being locks, which leaves Davis and Dominique Dafney fighting for that fourth roster spot–which is how many tight ends that Green Bay has rostered each year under LaFleur.
However, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them keep five with the potential that both Davis and Dafney could bring to the special teams unit.
Without Tonyan last season, the Packers greatly missed his presence in the passing game, as there was no one else at the position who could affect the game quite like he could. Perhaps Davis can bring that element to the offense as well–although most likely, his biggest contributions will come on special teams.
But first things first, Davis has to go earn a roster spot.
