Luis Urias has had an interesting season for the Milwaukee Brewers. After getting off to a blazing hot start upon his return from the IL in May, Urias has not been able to find it back since.

Urias has gained a reputation as a streaky hitter throughout his career and the 2022 season has been no different so far. Let’s take a look at Urias’ season so far and give it a grade.

Grading Luis Urias’ 2022 season for Milwaukee Brewers at the All-Star break

The Milwaukee Brewers didn’t know how much they missed having Urias in the lineup until they got him back. At least that’s how it seemed when he got off to a fantastic start following his return from a quad injury that kept him out until May 3rd.

In the first 24 games that Urias played this season, he was spectacular for the Crew, totaling batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS splits of .261/.349/.784 while mashing 5 home runs.

Since then, things have not been so sweet for Urias. In the 38 games since, Urias totals have dipped to .202/.292/.650. Those numbers are not great, especially when given the fact that the Brewers traded for Urias and Willy Adames to get away from those types of numbers, the ones that have plagued their shortstop position for several years.

Overall, Urias’ stats average out to be .223/.314/.699 in the three categories. Urias, especially lately, has not been the same hitter that he was in his breakout 2021 campaign. His hard hit percentage has dropped significantly from last season when it was 40.5 percent to just 33.5 percent so far in 2022.

Urias just hasn’t been able to put good wood on the ball this season. His solid contact and barrel percentages are also down in 2022 to 3.5 and 8.2 percent, compared to 7.4 and 9.3 percent in the same categories.

Dairyland Express Grade: C+

It pains me to give Urias such a poor grade because he is one of my favorite players on the team. Maybe my grade is a little harsh because I expect so much out of one of my favorite players. Regardless, I do know one thing and that is Luis Urias has to be better for this Milwaukee Brewers team to get to where they want to go.

Throughout his career, Urias has always been a very streaky hitter. We saw what Urias can be as a hitter in 2021 when he broke out as a solid power hitter in the Brewers lineup. He looked like he was on his way to duplicating that and perhaps even building on that early in 2022, but things have since slowed.

If Urias is ever able to eliminate the inconsistency from his offensive performance, he’ll be one of the great players of the future for the Brewers. There would be no better time for him to do that than now, as the Brewers start the second half and begin their run towards the pennant.

Urias has always been stellar in the field. You could make numerous highlight reels of his plays out there. Now if the Brewers ever get his offensive output that consistent, then they’ll be in business in a big way.
