The final installment of our Green Bay Packers’ 2022 summer preview series releases today with a quick look at the safety position.
We’ve scoured the rest of the roster to figure out what’s going on at each position, and we conclude with, perhaps, the perfect example of what Green Bay is working with this season. The safety position has some very good players at the top of the depth chart with the potential to be even better this season, but it lacks any depth behind their top guys.
Let’s quickly dive in to learn more about what to expect this season.
Here is a position-by-position preview of the Green Bay Packers continuing with their safety situation heading into the 2022 NFL season.
Currently on Roster: Adrian Amos, Tariq Carpenter, Shawn Davis, Innis Gaines, Darnell Savage, Vernon Scott, Tre Sterling
When evaluating this position, all eyes will be on Tariq Carpenter, Shawn Davis, Innis Gaines, Vernon Scott and Tre Sterling. They will battle it out for the final two or three roster spots, as at least one of them hopes to separate themselves from the pack (no pun intended).
Scott has previous experience on the Packers’ roster which might give him a slight edge if he can take another step forward. However, Gaines, Carpenter and Davis each bring something different to the table that could set them apart. It should be a fascinating battle.
Depth Chart projection: Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage, Shawn Davis, Innis Gaines
Ultimately, I believe Davis will be the player who rises above the rest. His athleticism was on display earlier this offseason and the coaching staff appears to like the skillset he brings. After that, it’s a toss up between Gaines, Scott and Carpenter with Sterling on the outside looking in. The Packers could easily keep five safeties here to bolster their depth on defense and special teams.
Big Picture:
It’s a real possibility the Packers add a veteran free agent or someone who is cut. They lack depth and are one injury to Amos or Savage away from being in a world of hurt. The signing probably won’t be a big name or someone who would have a huge impact; instead, a player who is simply capable of holding their own on an NFL field.
Savage needs to take that step he’s been teasing for years now. Green Bay needs their defense to be better than ever and part of that hinges on Savage’s development. He’s shown flashes of excellent play, but seemed to regress last season. The Packers can’t afford the same level of play repeated in 2022 if they want to get over the hump and win the Super Bowl finally.
