How quickly can Packers’ rookies Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs earn larger roles?

Again, Aaron Rodgers will, in all likelihood, favor the Packers’ veteran pass-catchers, but that doesn’t mean that Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs won’t have specific roles–because they will.

Watson, with his speed, can take the top off opposing defenses and could also be used as a gadget player–getting him in space and putting the ball in his hands quickly.

Doubs can also stretch the field, finishing the 2020 college season with the third most downfield receiving yards in all of college football. He is also a polished player overall who could provide this offense with another slot presence and someone who can make plays in all parts of the field.

However, how quickly those two can become consistent targets for Rodgers in higher leverage situations remains to be seen. It all begins with getting to know the playbook and earning Rodgers’ trust in practice.

During minicamp, when speaking with reporters, Rodgers would discuss how there are two offenses for these rookies to learn. There is the playbook and then what actually takes place on the field.

We also all know how important building that rapport with Rodgers is as well. If he can’t trust you in practice, he probably won’t look your way in a game. There are also the last-second adjustments made at the line of scrimmage, some of which take place through non-verbal cues.

Next. Could be a "long training camp" for Packers offense. dark

We should all be prepared for ups and downs from Watson and Doubs; that’s just the nature of the NFL for any rookie. But for this Packers’ offense to be at their best, they’ll need steady contributions from these rookies; we will just have to wait and see how long that takes.
