Green Bay Packers 2022 summer preview: Quarterbacks
The Green Bay Packers have officially wrapped up Organized Team Activities and Mandatory Minicamp and are now in the dog days of summer. Or something like that.
With the players returning to their individual workouts, fans are left squabbling over any news related to their team. In order to pass the time, we’ll take a position by position look at the Packers and preview who they currently have on the roster, what the depth chart/playing time situation will look like, and who else is out there should the team want to upgrade/add depth.
With rookies required to report to training camp on July 22nd and veterans not until July 26th, we have about a month of time to pass. So let’s kick off this series with a very straightforward position: Quarterback.
Let’s take a position-by-position look at the Green Bay Packers this summer by starting with their quarterback situation.
Currently on Roster: Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, Danny Etling
The Packers just waived Kurt Benkert last week, presumably to give him the opportunity to catch on with another team before the season begins. Green Bay might look to bring in another player at the position for training, but it would be a practice squad candidate at best and a warm body at worst.
Depth Chart: 1. Aaron Rodgers 2. Jordan Love
What more is there to say? Barring a catastrophic injury, Green Bay will only have the need for two quarterbacks on their roster and can save space for other key positions. Rodgers will be the unquestioned starter and Love will get mop-up duty when the Packers are winning by double-digits at the end of every game.
That only leaves a practice squad spot open for Etling which is fine by everyone involved. Green Bay can continue developing him and use him in the case of extreme emergencies only. The Packers could bring in another young quarterback to compete with Etling, but that would be the only addition to this position.
Big Picture:
Aaron Rodgers was great in the regular season once again, but laid a dud in their postseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He’ll have much less to work with this season so expect a drop in his production as he enters Year 18. The good news is Green Bay as a team is set up better to pick up the slack. It remains to be determined what the long-term plan is for Rodgers and Love and solely depends on how long Rodgers plays.
