Green Bay Packers Tight End Tyler Davis

While, at least at the NFL level, tight end Tyler Davis is far from proven — in fact, he has hardly any regular season snaps — given what we’ve heard about him this offseason, him playing a larger role in 2022 feels inevitable.

Following the draft, GM Brian Gutekunst spoke highly of Davis. And then, more recently, it was Matt LaFleur. And then it was Rich Bisaccia.

The little that we saw from Davis last season was him as a very willing and high-effort blocker–ranking 17th out of all tight ends in PFF’s run-blocking grade. He also made a nice reception down the seam against Baltimore. While Bisaccia really likes what he can bring to special teams, after playing 251 snaps in 2021, according to PFF ($$).

With Robert Tonyan returning, along with Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, and Dominique Dafney, this is a crowded tight end room already where a difficult decision may have to be made. Where Davis can potentially stand out is by providing this offense with another reliable pass-catching threat in addition to Tonyan. As we saw last season when Tonyan was out, there isn’t another tight end on this roster who can impact the passing game quite like he can.

Ultimately, it’s going to come down to how well Davis plays this summer, but he appears poised for a larger role after seeing only 132 offensive snaps a season ago, and he could be a key special teams player as well.

"“He certainly made his mark on special teams,” Matt LaFleur said via Packers Wire. “I know he’s a guy that Rich was really excited about when we hired him, just what he can bring. He’s a guy that’s going to give you great effort each and every snap, and he can really run.”"
