Surprise cut candidates: Sammy Watkins

The Sammy Watkins era has the potential to end before it even begins. It’s way too early to say how he’s looked and I’m not advocating for the Packers to cut him. I’m simply outlining a path that exists to a Watkins-less team.

The Packers have to desperately figure out their wide receiver position and Watkins is one of the few players with a proven track record in the NFL. Green Bay also has a plethora of receivers who are capable of making the roster–Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, Amari Rodgers, Watkins, Christian Watson, Samouri Toure, Romeo Doubs, Juwann Winfree and Malik Taylor.

Green Bay certainly won’t keep nine and will be hard-pressed to even keep seven unless two or more are special team’s contributors. If we say Cobb, Lazard, Rodgers and Watson are locks–that leaves three spots at most that Watkins is fighting for.
