ARLINGTON, TX – APRIL 26: A video board displays the text ‘THE PICK IS IN’ for the Green Bay Packers during the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft at AT /

Why didn’t the Green Bay Packers select a safety or tight end?

Coming into the draft, I thought that there was a pretty good chance that the Green Bay Packers would address both of these positions.

At safety, I’m not sure who is going to be the third option behind Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos, and on top of that, Savage and Vernon Scott are the only safety under contract in 2023—Tariq Carpenter is expected to be more of a linebacker. At tight end, it’s a similar story with Josiah Deguara being the only player under contract at the position next season.

However, as we all know, the Packers wouldn’t address either need. So why not?

Well, maybe it’s as simple as the board just didn’t fall correctly. That’s a major part of the draft that is often overlooked. Or perhaps with the addition of Quay Walker, which should lead to more traditional nickel packages with two linebackers, Green Bay is going to rely far less on the third safety than what they have in the past.

Meanwhile, at tight end, Gutekunst told reporters that the team likes what they have in Tyler Davis. So maybe we will see more of him in 2022 and he is going to be a part of the long-term plans as well.

These are just a few possibilities, but either way, I was surprised to see that Green Bay didn’t address either position in the draft.
