Green Bay Packers add needed speed and playmaking on offense

Last month, during the NFL Owner’s meetings, Matt LaFleur spoke with reporters, and when discussing the receiver position, he mentioned that there is a need for speed.

"“Certainly, if you look at our roster right now, we definitely need to get some speed in that room,” LaFleur said, per ESPN."

Of course, speed will help create those big-play opportunities but it will also create better spacing, which can open up the passing game for others. And as LaFleur alludes to, that element was missing prior to the draft.

Well, in the second round, the Green Bay Packers selected Christian Watson, who ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash. Romeo Doubs posted a 40-time of 4.47-seconds and would finish the 2020 college season with the third most downfield passing yards out of any receiver. Seventh-rounder Samori Toure is another big-play threat, averaging 19.3 yards per catch this past season with Nebraska and 4.43-second 40-yard time.

This Green Bay Packers offense needed speed and playmaking ability, and that is clearly what Gutekunst was targeting throughout the draft–especially on Day 3.
