The Green Bay Packers don’t care what you think. Or what anyone thinks. After taking linebacker Quay Walker with the 22nd overall pick, they selected another defensive player from Georgia at 28th overall in defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt.

After re-signing key pieces such as De’Vondre Campbell and Rasul Douglas in free agency, the Packers doubled down on defense for 2022 and are apparently all in on that side of the ball. With wide receiver still the biggest need on the team, it’s clear they went with a best player available approach with their top two picks.

This will surely anger a lot of fans, as Allen Lazard is currently the Packers’ number one wide receiver heading into Day 2 of the draft. Before we get our undies in a bunch, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of this pick.

Here are the pros and cons to the Green Bay Packers selection of defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt with the 28th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Con: He doesn’t play wide receiver

I touched on this a little bit above, but it’s worth mentioning again. George Pickens and Christian Watson were potentially targets at this spot, but the Packers went in a different direction. At this point, they will lean heavily on Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur to create offense for them next season.

Pro: Help for Kenny Clark

Kenny Clark has desperately needed help along the defensive line for years, as he’s seemingly been out there on his own. Wyatt will free Clark up to make even more plays for this defense and give Green Bay a nice one-two punch upfront. It will be interesting to see what this means for Dean Lowry. Lowry finished 2021 on a high note, but the Packers can save some money from their salary cap by cutting him.

Con: Lacks play recognition

One of Wyatt’s biggest weaknesses is his inability to diagnose plays accurately and quickly. This can lead to him being caught out of position or even being knocked off balance and to the ground. Green Bay’s coaching staff will want to get in there right away and coach him up in this aspect.

Pro: Great athletic traits (surprise!)

The Packers love their athletes in the first round and Wyatt is no different. He has a great combination of size (6-foot-3 and 304 pounds) and speed that will only add to this defense. This athleticism shows up on the field as well and he’s able to make plays as a result. It will be very entertaining to see the energy and athleticism Wyatt and Walker inject into this defense.
