Round 1, Pick 28 for the Green Bay Packers

Matt’s Pick: Lewis Cine, S, Georgia

Lewis Cine is absolutely one of my favorite choices for the Packers at pick 28 in this draft class. The hard-hitting safety from Georgia can instantly become a difference-maker in the Green Bay defense. He is an uber-aggressive, attacking player who I see playing a down-safety position. Cine can be the missing piece Joe Barry’s defense has been missing. He not only has competent coverage skills over the top but above average man coverage and excellent production in stopping the run. What I see is a versatile weapon that can unlock a new level to the defense,

Another reason to draft Cine is that the future of both Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage is filled with uncertainty past this season. Amos will be on the wrong side of 30 soon, and it is yet to be seen if the Packers will offer him an extension. Darnell Savage has all the tools to dominate, but he has just not quite put it all together yet. Cine provides an option not only for the present but as a long-term starter for the GB defense.

Kenny’s Pick: Travis Jones, IDL, UConn

Travis Jones is a big man. At 6’4″ 325 pounds, he measured out somewhat similarly to Jordan Davis and draws many similarities to the uber-athletic Georgia defensive tackle.

In all three seasons that he played at UConn, he had at least 5.5 tackles for loss, so he can get in the backfield and make plenty of plays. While the run defense improved last season with De’Vondre Campbell making tons of plays in the middle, the defensive line could still use another playmaker next to Kenny Clark, and those two next to each other in the trenches would cause nightmares for anyone trying to run the ball.

I get it, he’s not a wide receiver, so it’s not the pick that people want, but him and Cine would transform this defense and fill the needs that are left for it. And if you’re mad that I didn’t take a wide receiver in the first round, just keep reading, we’ll get there.
