Round 2, Pick 59 for the Green Bay Packers

Round 2: Pick 59

Matt’s Pick: John Metchie, WR, Alabama

Metchie III was nothing short of spectacular during his tenure at the University of Alabama. He is one of the most interesting prospects in the draft class, as he tore his ACL in December but is expected to be fully recovered by the start of the NFL season. How will this injury affect his draft stock? If he ends up in the latter portion of Round 2, then Brian Gutekunst should swoop in. Remember when I mentioned the Packers have a knack for finding day 2 receiving talent? Well, grabbing Watson and Metchie back to back would continue their success.

Metchie, if reports are true that he will be back for Week 1, can instantly become another weapon for back-to-back MVP Aaron Rodgers. He is a stud in the slot and has the opportunity to take over that role in the offense. He and second-year receiver Amari Rodgers would have a competitive training camp battle to win the coveted slot snaps alongside of Randall Cobb.

Metchie’s highlight tape from his Crismon Tide days is beyond stellar. His yard after catch ability is not rivaled by anyone else in this draft class and makes him an ideal prospect for the Packers to take a look at. Granted his ACL recovery must be going well in order to be considered, but Metchie III is an absolute steal this late in the second round.

Kenny’s Pick: Travis Jones, IDL, UCONN

Keeping in theme with the athletic freaks, Travis Jones has it all at defensive tackle. He has similar measurables to all of Jordan Davis’ who is considered one of the most unique athletic prospects to come out of college in recent years.

He comes it a 6’4” – 325 pounds and still managed to run a 4.92 40-yard dash and do the 3-cone drill in 7.33 seconds, which is 92nd percentile for defensive tackles. All of his measurements added up to a 9.65 Relative Athletic Score, which maxes out at 10. He is a big man who can move and move well.

Probably the biggest reason he isn’t projected higher is simply that he didn’t play in a Power-5 conference. He went to UConn, and while he was dominant there, some may be wary of his lack of competition. In his senior season, he had 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, numbers which increased each year he was there. Seeing that growth from him is huge, especially as a pass rusher after getting just half a sack in his freshman campaign. Having him on this defensive line could really improve the run defense and stuff things up inside while adding a little bit of pass rush prowess as well.
