3 Packers 3-Round Mock Draft Simulations & Big Takeaways
By Paul Bretl
Mock Draft Simulation No. 3 for Packers
Pick 22: Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama
Pick 28: Boye Mafe, EDGE, Minnesota
Pick 53: Bernhard Raimann, OT, Central Michigan
Pick 59: Travis Jones, IDL, UCONN
Pick 92: Cade Otton, TE, Washington
Takeaway: Some may feel differently, but if Jameson Williams is on the board at 22 and the Packers select him, I’ll be very happy with the pick. Prior to his ACL injury, Williams may have been considered WR1 in this class after a dominant season that included 20.6 yards per catch per PFF $$).
We don’t know when he will be available in 2022, but remember, the draft is about planning ahead as well, and the value here is just too good to pass up. I’m also not overly concerned about any lingering effects from his injury, while we all just saw Bakhtiari practically miss an entire season, that in part was due to when it happened, but the setbacks he experienced along the way are closer to being outliers than the norm.
I also like the selection of Mafe at pick 28. He’s an explosive athlete who needs to refine his technique, but he is loaded with upside, and his run defense has improved as well. He may be 23-years-old, which could take him off Green Bay’s Round 1 board, but he comes with a high ceiling and would make an impact right away on passing downs.
Now, after saying I don’t think Raimann is on the Packers board in Round 1, Round 2 is a different story. If available at this point, his age may not be as big of a factor–and as I mentioned previously, he will compete for the starting right tackle spot right away.
Then at pick 59, I absolutely love the selection of Jones, who would be an immediate help against the run, his presence would free up Kenny Clark, and he brings pass-rush upside with his athleticism. Honestly, if he was the pick at 28, I’d still be happy that Green Bay landed him. With Otton, you already know that I’m a fan of this pick with what he can offer both as a pass-catcher and a blocker.
Without question, this is the best mock draft of the bunch–and it isn’t particularly close. Green Bay still only lands one receiver, and he may not even be available right away — meaning they’ll have to explore free agency or a trade — but without the ACL injury, Williams is potentially a top-12 pick. Every other pick could come in and either be a potential starter or, at the minimum, a key part of their positional group’s rotation.
