The Milwaukee Brewers take three out of four in an early September series to pull within two games of the Chicago Cubs for the second Wild Card Spot.

The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers met at Miller Park for a pivotal four-game series. The Cubs took the first game to extend their lead over the Brewers to five games in the Wild Card race.

The Brewers went on to outscore the Cubs 18-8 in the next three games to trim the lead to just two games.

Christian Yelich was the hero in the first two wins. He hit a big three-run homer off Cole Hamels in the Brewers’ 7-1 win in the second game of the series.

Yelich came up with a walk-off hit in the next game. The Cubs took a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. Yasmani Grandal hit a big solo home run to tie the game at two.

Yelich drove in pinch-hitter Tyler Austin with a two-out double off former Brewers pitcher Brandon Kintzler.

Austin came back the next game to smack a pinch-hit, three-run homer as the Crew teed off on Jon Lester.

The Brewers took the final game of the series with an 8-5 win.

The Milwaukee Brewers closed out September strong to take the second Wild Card spot. The Chicago Cubs faded down the stretch and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
