Green Bay Packers Pick 59: Isaiah Likely, TE, Coastal Carolina
When we look at the current state of the Green Bay Packers tight end room, they have several capable blockers in Josiah Deguara, Marcedes Lewis, Dominique Dafney, and Tyler Davis, which, as we know, is very important. But with Robert Tonyan a free agent, they do not have that pass-catching element–something this offense greatly missed with Tonyan sidelined last season.
To get the most out of the tight end position this season, adding a veteran in free agency is likely the best route, as rookie tight ends often take a season or two to adjust to the NFL before we see them as truly productive players. However, that doesn’t mean the Packers shouldn’t draft one, and with a pass-catching tight end being a big need this offseason, Likely certainly can fill that role.
Over his career, Likely caught 72% of his 169 targets at 15.4 yards per catch per PFF and was one of the best tight ends in college football at picking up YAC. He lined up all over the formation during his time at Coastal Carolina and has improved as a blocker as well–although his primary responsibility is to make plays in the passing game.
