Green Bay Packers Pick 53: Travis Jones, IDL, UCONN
The interior defensive line room is very thin at the moment for the Green Bay Packers, with only four players under contract for the 2022 season. It’s also a very upgradable position, with the Packers still ranking in the bottom third of the NFL last season against the run.
Jones is known for his run-stuffing abilities from his time at UCONN and will often align as the 0 or 1-tech, where he will eat up space and take on double-teams. Having this element on this Packers defense will allow them to continue moving Kenny Clark around in search of more of those one-on-one opportunities, and it will also help keep the linebackers clean as well.
With what Jones will be asked to do, he may never fill the stat sheet — or at least not consistently — but his presence will be welcomed by his teammates. When you have someone in the middle of the defensive front doing the dirty work, everyone around him benefits.
Although early on, Jones’ primary responsibilities will be against the run, he does have some upside as a pass-rusher, totaling 48 pressures in 2019 and 2021. He would also test very well at the combine.
