Green Bay Packers Pick 28: George Karlaftis, EDGE, Purdue
The Green Bay Packers may have Preston Smith and Rashan Gary, two of the most productive edge rushers in football last season, but edge rusher is a heavily rotated position and when neither were on the field, the lack of impact plays was quite noticeable. Those third and fourth edge rusher roles are going to be up for grabs this summer.
However, landing Karlaftis at pick 28 helps fill that need, but it also feels like a steal at this point in the draft. With Smith and Gary to lean on, Karlaftis doesn’t have to be “the guy” right away and instead can provide a needed boost off the bench and can be put in positions to be successful. Green Bay will have the luxury of taking the same approach with Karlaftis as they did with Gary.
During the 2019 and 2021 seasons, Karlaftis recorded 109 total pressures and 13 sacks, according to PFF ($$). He is also stout against the run and can move inside if needed, similar to how the Packers have utilized Gary and Za’Darius Smith in the past. Karlaftis would post an elite Relative Athletic Score (RAS) at the NFL Combine, posting 9.28 out of a possible 10.
