Why the Green Bay Packers won’t re-sign Kevin King

The two big reasons are consistency and durability–or I should say a lack thereof.

Although we just highlighted a decent three-game stretch for King, for the season, he still allowed a completion rate of 73% along with 14.5 yards per catch and a passer rating when targeted of 116.7. He also gave up three plays of over 40 yards.

During Green Bay’s final five games of the season, including the playoffs, King saw only 46 total snaps, which included two games where he never had more than eight. And instead of playing cornerback, King had transitioned to the dime linebacker role–which in a way felt like a last-ditch effort on the Packers’ part to find him a role.

On top of that, as we all know, King has struggled to stay on the field due to injuries. Outside of the 2019 season, King has never appeared in more than 11 games in a season over his five-year career, and even in a reduced role in 2021, he still missed seven games.

As they say, a player’s best ability is availability, and in addition to the ups and downs that King has experienced on the field, he frequently has not been available either. Out of a possible 80 career regular-season games, King has played in just 51 of them.
