Packers who need salary cap clarity for 2022 offseason: Jaire Alexander
Packers who need salary cap clarity for 2022 offseason: Preston Smith
Packers who need salary cap clarity for 2022 offseason: Za’Darius Smith
The answer to Jaire Alexander’s status is simple: A contract extension for the young cornerback. Before losing most of the 2021 season to injury, his arrow was pointing straight up and he was in the conversation for the best cornerback in the NFL. The two sides appear to be engaged in contract negotiations and a deal is expected before the start of free agency, saving Green Bay loads of money on this year’s cap.
Za’Darius Smith’s status is also fairly simple, although it goes in the other direction. Green Bay can save a whopping $15.281 million by cutting him. They already played the entire 2021 campaign without him and fared well in the process. This is just a matter of time.
Preston Smith has the trickiest situation. Green Bay can’t really afford to cut both Smiths, leaving Rashan Gary and a bunch of scrubs on the roster. However, they can save $12.47 million by doing so. However, they can still save up to $8.7 million via an extension. Let’s see what they decide to do.
