Prediction: The Green Bay Packers re-sign Corey Bojorquez

Special teams have not been an area of emphasis for the Green Bay Packers for a long time, and the results on the field have reflected that.

By Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings, Green Bay finished last in 2021, 29th in 2020, 26th in 2019, and 32nd in 2018. Since 2014, Green Bay has ranked last three separate times, and they haven’t finished in the top-10 since 2007. And, of course, special teams play is a major reason why they lost in the playoffs to San Francisco.

If there isn’t an added emphasis on the unit this season, both in roster construction and time devoted to it during practice, then there never will be–or at least not with Brian Gutekunst at the helm.

But as I previously mentioned, adding Rich Bisaccia to the coaching staff is a very good first step in shifting how the special teams unit is viewed within the organization. Another step in the right direction would be re-signing Corey Bojorquez–even if they have to pay more than what they did a season ago.

For all the reasons mentioned, Bojorquez’s ability to hit different punts depending on the situation, his consistency, and honestly, if he does those two things well and finishes around league average by the numbers, that will be just fine. Obviously, if he can be one of the best punters in football, that’s great! But ultimately, Green Bay just needs reliability, and he can provide that.

In the past, letting Bojorquez walk seemed like the type of move the Green Bay Packers would make. But as we’ve seen, finding a steady punter isn’t exactly easy–or at least it hasn’t been for the Packers. If Gutey and Co. are truly invested in turning this special teams unit around, then that should include re-signing Bojorquez.
