Green Bay Packers Re-Sign or Let Go & Prediction: Corey Bojorquez
By Paul Bretl
Why the Green Bay Packers would let Corey Bojorquez walk
As described above, there is much more to looking at a punter’s performance than just the raw numbers–and that’s true at every position. Consistency and the ability to be effective in different situations are crucial as well, and oftentimes Bojorquez was able to do that.
With that said, in many of those statistical categories, Bojorquez was around league average–which is fine, but it’s not as if he was dominant either. According to PFF ($$), Bojorquez finished 13th in yards per attempt, 20th in punt inside the 20-yard line, 13th on total touchbacks, 26th in total fair catches, and 10th in hangtime.
Again, not bad by any means, and Bojorquez finished the 2021 season better in each of those categories — except for hangtime — than what Scott did in 2020 when he was with the team. Also, it’s not as if Bojorquez was immune to some major miscues as well–we still saw poor holds on field goal attempts, a shanked punt or two, and he would out-kick his coverage unit on occasion too.
We all know that the Green Bay Packers still have to navigate their way under the salary cap, and we do not know how much spending power they will have in free agency. While the contract for a punter isn’t going to move the needle or eat up cap space like contracts at other positions, perhaps this is a position the Packers look to save cap space at.
Bojorquez’s cap hit in 2021 was $1.02 million. Could he be in store for a bigger payday on the open market? And if so, will Green Bay look for a more cost-effective option, who they believe could finish around the league average in those statistical categories as Bojorquez did, either through free agency or in this draft class?
If they believe that’s a viable option, then they certainly could let Bojorquez walk and sign elsewhere.
