8 Combine Prospects to Watch at Packers Positions of Need
By Paul Bretl
Green Bay Packers Position of Need: Offensive Tackle, Nicholas Petit-Frere, Ohio State
Offensive tackle is one of those positions where there is no such thing as too much depth. This is a group that could also look a bit different in 2022 depending on what happens with Billy Turner. Would Green Bay move Yosh Nijman to right tackle? Does the right tackle job belong to Elgton Jenkins once he returns?
Petit-Frere has 1,378 career snaps with the Buckeyes and over half of them came during the 2021 season. Per PFF, Petit-Frere would allow two sacks and 26 pressures in 453 pass-blocking attempts as the primary left tackle. By PFF’s grading system, he was much more effective as a run-blocker than a pass-blocker.
"“Petit-Frere has excellent physical tools and offers the kind of frame that is meant to play on the edge. He’s long, dense, and fluid as an athlete, offering a promising skill set for an NFL team to continue to tinker with in an effort to reach his high ceiling,” said Crabbs of The Draft Network. There are some technical and instinctual lapses that pop up from time to time in his footwork and angles, but generally speaking, Petit-Frere has overwhelmed most opponents with his blend of traits.”"
Green Bay Packers Position of Need: Linebacker, JoJo Doman, Nebraska
If De’Vondre Campbell is re-signed, the Green Bay Packers linebacker room will look much different. But at the moment, it is incredibly thin.
Doman has 1,967 career snaps, according to PFF, with a bulk of them coming over the last three seasons. Over his career, he has totaled 20 pressures, four sacks, and 178 total tackles. In coverage, he has allowed just 8.6 yards per catch, including only 5.4 in 2021, on 135 targets and Doman has also recorded 12 pass breakups and two interceptions.
He is listed as a linebacker and is built like one, but Doman is incredibly versatile — he began his career as a safety — and has taken a majority of his career snaps from the slot. He would provide the Packers with a very good middle of the field coverage defender.
"“Domann is at his best in coverage,” said Crabbs, “he’s got very fluid zone drops to collision routes and uses his peripheral vision to feel route combinations. His reactive quickness and transitions in space are excellent and I think he can create a lot of ball production in the pro game.”"
