Immediate moves for Packers: Extend Preston Smith

After having a down 2020 season that looked as if his career peak had been reached, Preston Smith rebounded in a big way in 2021 and looked rejuvenated on multiple levels.

The Packers desperately needed his production, as they suffered multiple injuries at the position throughout the year and had very little depth behind Smith and Gary. Because of that lack of depth (and inability to directly acquire players at the position), Green Bay will probably look to keep P. Smith. Although they’d save about $12.5 million by cutting him, they’d save $8.7 million by extending him. The latter is the way to go so they can both save money and keep a talented player at a premier position.
