Green Bay Packers Pick 92: Brian Asamoah, LB, Oklahoma

Linebacker is another very thin position on this Green Bay Packers team with Ty Summers, Isaiah McDuffie, and Ray Wilborn as the only players currently under contract for the 2022 season–however, I do expect Krys Barnes, an exclusive rights free agent, to return.

There does also appear to be some level of mutual interest in a reunion with free agent De’Vondre Campbell, but it remains to be seen if a deal will actually get done. If Campbell ends up playing elsewhere, Green Bay will absolutely have to address linebacker this offseason, and they’ll have to do so fairly early on in the draft if they don’t tackle this position in free agency.

Enter Brian Asamoah, who is listed at 6’1″ – 228 pounds. He has three years of playing experience, with a majority of his snaps coming over the last two seasons when he took over as the starter. In 2020, Asamoah logged 12 pressures and two sacks while allowing 13.7 yards per catch in coverage per PFF.

This past season, he would record 14 pressures, along with one sack, but where he really improved was in coverage, allowing just 9.3 yards per catch. Asamoah is primarily a box defender, and he was one of the more reliable tacklers at the linebacker position last season.

Below is a look at what The Draft Network had to say about the Oklahoma linebacker in their pre-draft scouting report:

"“As a prospect, Asamoah shows great athleticism that allows him to be a sideline-to-sideline player showcasing great closing speed to the ball-carrier. Asamoah has the ability to key and diagnose run plays, and on arrival, Asamoah is a violent tackler that thrusts his entire body into the ball-carrier. Asamoah is a good athlete at linebacker that should see early playing time in nickel packages in the NFL.”"
