Green Bay Packers Re-sign or Let Go & Prediction: Marquez Valdes-Scantling
By Paul Bretl
Why the Green Bay Packers could let Marquez Valdes-Scantling walk
As dangerous as the Aaron Rodgers to Marquez Valdes-Scantling combination can be on the deep ball, there are numerous games over the course of the season where MVS is quite quiet from a production standpoint.
In 11 games last season, Valdes-Scantling had three or fewer receptions in eight of them, and in six of those games, he had less than 20 receiving yards. MVS also caught only six of his 22 pass attempts of more than 20-yards, according to PFF ($$).
Now, to some degree, that’s the nature of the job when you’re primary responsibility is being a deep threat — he is never going to be a super-efficient target — but if investing in a player, ideally, there would be more consistency.
The salary cap is also going to be a factor as well. As I wrote recently, I do believe that the Green Bay Packers will have more flexibility than what is assumed, but how much? Well, that’s the big question. Just because there may be more doesn’t mean there will be a lot.
Spotrac currently projects Valdes-Scantling to make $8.7 million per year on a new three-year deal. And if that’s the neighborhood his new contract falls in, my guess is that it is out of Green Bay’s price range. Even if the Packers have the intention of bringing him back, it only takes one other team to fall in love and make an offer that the Packers can’t compete with.
