Why the Green Bay Packers won’t re-sign Lucas Patrick

Perhaps the biggest reason that Green Bay won’t re-sign Lucas Patrick is the depth that they have along the interior offensive line.

As of now, the Green Bay Packers Week 1 offensive line configuration is going to be young, with Jon Runyan, Josh Myers, and Royce Newman the likely starters along the interior. All had their ups and downs in 2021, which should have been expected given their inexperience, but there is also plenty of upside that comes with each player as well–and with Runyan and Newman, we saw steady improvement over the course of the season.

While not a given, that improvement should continue as each player has another year in Matt LaFleur’s offense, another training camp, and preseason under their belts, along with the experience they gained from 2021. On top of that, hopefully, Elgton Jenkins returns at some point, and if the Packers choose to keep him lined up inside, either Runyan or Newman will become a backup.

Another factor is money. We know that the Green Bay Packers don’t exactly have much cap space, and given Patrick’s play the last two seasons, he could likely earn starter money elsewhere–which could very well put him out of the Packers’ price range.
