Green Bay Packers Cut ’em or Keep ’em & Prediction: Marcedes Lewis
By Paul Bretl
Why the Green Bay Packers could cut Marcedes Lewis
Cap savings: $2.44 million
A lot of the reasons why the Green Bay Packers would move on from Marcedes Lewis have to do with the salary cap savings. For a team that is almost $51 million over the projected salary cap — and that doesn’t even include every expense — difficult decisions and pinching pennies are going to be requirements this offseason, and this move is certainly both of those things.
While no tight end on the Packers roster is the caliber of blocker that Lewis is, they do have several options who could assume similar roles, including Dominique Dafney, Tyler Davis, as well as Josiah Degeuara–all three ranked in the top-17 of PFF’s run-blocking grades this past season.
Again, there is no replacing Lewis, especially what he offers off the field, but having those three tight ends would go a long way in helping Green Bay absorb his absence. They all bring added upside in the passing game as well.
There is also the old saying in football that it’s better to move on from a player a year early than a year late. Although Lewis is still one of the best at what he does, at almost 38-years-old, you never know when his play could start to decline. Or who knows, perhaps Lewis makes the decision for Green Bay and retires on his own.
