Prediction: The Green Bay Packers keep Dean Lowry

Just as I said when making my prediction about Billy Turner, there really isn’t an outcome with Dean Lowry that will surprise me. I truly believe that cutting him, a restructure, or maybe even a short extension are all in play, which makes this prediction all the more difficult.

However, with that said, I do think that Lowry is one of those players who is held in much higher regard within the Green Bay Packers organization than on the outside–in large part due to the role that he typically plays not being a glamorous one.

Lowry is still just 27-years-old; as I’ve already mentioned, he’s coming off a very good season, and I’m not so sure that this is a position that the Green Bay Packers can be picky with, given its current status.

Without Lowry, Green Bay will be relying heavily on two second-year players–one a fifth-round pick and the other a UDFA. Of course, the Packers will have to add to the position, but odds are they aren’t going to be able to splurge in free agency on anyone, and I’m not so sure how willing they are to address the need early on in the draft–I mean, they haven’t the last few seasons.

Sure, everyone wants to upgrade from Lowry, but I’m not so sure how easily that is to actually do, and in the process, Green Bay may leave themselves incredibly thin at the interior defensive line position.

If the Packers choose to keep Lowry, he can play out 2022 on his current deal. But if the team is still looking to create cap space, Over the Cap projects that an extension for Lowry would create $3.61 million in cap space while a restructure would create $3.38 million in cap space.
