Players Packers can extend: Za’Darius Smith

Salary Cap Savings: $11.3 million

It’s highly unlikely the Packers cut both Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith, leaving Gary and a bunch of huge question marks at a critical position. It’s also unlikely they keep both of the Smiths given each of their salary cap implications.

If they do go the route of extending Za’Darius–a guy who is quickly approaching 30-years-old and just missed an entire season due to a back injury–it will have its risks and rewards. The biggest reward would be saving $11.3 million off their 2022 cap. However, that’s about $4 million less than what they’d save if they cut him outright.
