Players Packers can extend: Preston Smith

Salary Cap Savings: $8.7 million

Preston Smith had a bounceback season for the Packers in 2022 and proved 2021 was more a hiccup than anything else. Smith was able to get after opposing quarterbacks while remaining solid against the run. Even better, he wasn’t asked to drop into coverage very often which helped hide one of his major weaknesses.

The Packers have some major decisions about what to do opposite Rashan Gary at outside linebacker next year. Both of the Smiths are logical candidates to have their contracts edited around in some way, shape or form. Extending Preston Smith could save the Packers a very good size of money and something they’ll have to look hard at.
