Why the Green Bay Packers could cut Billy Turner

2022 cap savings: $3.35 million

The cap savings aren’t massive, but this offseason, it’s all about pinching pennies, which could result in Green Bay moving on from players like Turner.

While Turner has certainly provided stability at right tackle, it’s not as if he has been an elite player there either. According to PFF, this past season, Turner finished 37th out of 55 eligible tackles in overall grade. His 34 pressures allowed ranked 31st, and he ranked 35th in PFF’s pass-blocking efficiency metric.

So by those metrics, Turner was about an average tackle last season, which is certainly not something to turn our noses up at–that’s extremely valuable. However, it’s not as if he is irreplaceable either.

Another big factor in this is how the Green Bay Packers view Elgton Jenkins and Yosh Nijman. With the play of Jon Runyan, Josh Myers, and Royce Newman, perhaps Green Bay would choose to move Jenkins to right tackle once he returns from injury. Or with how well Nijman held up at left tackle, maybe they decide to move him to the right side with David Bakhtiari still having three years left on his contract.

If the Packers find either of those players as viable options at right tackle, then this decision becomes easier to make.
