Green Bay Packers Tackle Key Positional Needs in PFN 7 Round Mock Draft
By Paul Bretl
Green Bay Packers second-round selection
Pick 59: Cameron Thomas, EDGE, San Diego State
"“The future remains uncertain on the edge for the Packers, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Adding 6’5″, 270-pound MWC standout Cameron Thomas is one way to quell concerns. Thomas has great power and drive, and can use his hands to capitalize at the apex.”"
Takeaway: Ian is very much correct here–the future at edge rusher for the Green Bay Packers is uncertain. In 2021, Rashan Gary was one of the most productive edge rushers in football, however, there are plenty of question marks behind him on the depth chart as we move forward.
Given the Packers cap situation as well as the cap hits that come with retaining Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith, there is a real possibility that both are cut — especially Za’Darius — and playing elsewhere next season. Even if one is back, the depth of this unit is still a concern, with Tipa Galeai and Jonathan Garvin still having plenty of room to grow.
Thomas has three years of playing experience with over 1,600 snaps, according to PFF. After totaling 37 pressures and five sacks in each of the previous two seasons, Thomas had a monster 2021 with 73 pressures and 12 sacks. He was also PFF’s sixth-highest graded edge rusher this season.
