Bold predictions for Packers’ offseason: Packers keep special teams coordinator Maurice Drayton
The Packers’ special teams sucked all season long and ranked last in many metrics that measured the special team’s effectiveness as a whole. Unfortunately, that wasn’t anything new in Green Bay, as they’ve cycled through coordinator after coordinator while seemingly never improving this critical third phase.
It came back to hurt Green Bay in the most pivotal of moments, as they had a field goal blocked that took three points off the board for them and then had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of their Divisional Round playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Many were calling for Maurice Drayton to be fired during the season and thought it would surely happen after that collapse. However, we are now a week away from the collapse and Drayton still has a job. That leads me to believe Green Bay will keep him all season long. Head Coach Matt LaFleur prioritizes relationships and he’s likely going to stick with Drayton for one more year.
Note: Shortly after this article was published, it was announced Maurice Drayton would not be returning as the special team’s coordinator for the Packers.
