Big Question No. 3 for the Green Bay Packers: How do the Green Bay Packers get under the salary cap?

For good reason, I’ve talked about this topic on a few occasions recently. Over the Cap has the Green Bay Packers at $50.4 million over the 2022 salary cap at this time, and as we’ve discussed before, that doesn’t include costs such as signing a practice squad, the last two players on the roster, any re-signings or additions, the draft class, as well as having funds available for in-season spending. So really, Green Bay needs to clear much more than just that $50.4 million.

Now, there are certainly plenty of ways that they can go about doing this. They could restructure any of the contracts that belong to Aaron Jones, Jaire Alexander, David Bakhtiari, or Kenny Clark to free up current cap space. They could also look to extend players, including Aaron Rodgers, Adrian Amos, or Preston Smith among others.

In addition to those cap-saving moves, there will be veteran cuts as well. It certainly won’t be everyone from this list, but it could include a combination of Amos, P. Smith, Za’Darius Smith, Randall Cobb, Mason Crosby, Billy Turner, or Dean Lowry. Trading Rodgers will also free up space as well.

There are plenty of financial moves that can be made to get Green Bay under the salary cap, but as I wrote about in a recent article, there are tradeoffs to every decision. If one player is kept on the roster, what corresponding move(s) have to be made to make it work financially–and many of these decisions won’t be easy ones.
