3 Big Things from another Heartbreaking Packers Playoff Loss
By Paul Bretl
An outstanding performance by the Green Bay Packers defense
Many entered this game thinking that the Green Bay Packers defense was going to be the weak link as they were up against a run-heavy Niners team that also possessed a ton of YAC ability in the passing game. However, ironically, it was the defense that kept the Packers in this one.
The Green Bay pass rush absolutely bullied the San Francisco offensive line, particularly Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary, as the unit came up with multiple third-down sacks and generated consistent pressure. The run defense was disciplined, setting strong edges and maintaining gap responsibilities, while the tackling was once again sound, as they were able to limit any big YAC opportunities.
The 49ers would average just 4.1 yards per play, which for reference, would have ranked last over the course of the regular season. San Francisco also averaged just 3.7 yards per carry–their average for the season was 4.3. The Packers were able to force a turnover, while the Niners were 4/12 on third and fourth downs, and 0/3 in the red zone.
Coming into the game we discussed keys for this Green Bay Packers defense against the 49ers, which included limiting YAC, sound tackling, generating pressure, run discipline, and capitalizing on turnover opportunities–and for the most part, they were very good in each area.
The defense did its part and delivered not just a good performance but a dominant one, allowing only six points. From front to back, the entire unit played at a high level, but unfortunately, the offense and special teams couldn’t do their part.
