Key to Victory No. 3 for the Green Bay Packers: A fast start and controlling the clock

As we all look for answers with the Green Bay Packers defense on a bit of a downward trend as of late, I wrote an article last week discussing how it’s actually the offensive side of the ball that can provide the defense with the biggest boost. And that sentiment seems to ring especially true against San Francisco.

By getting off to a fast start and controlling the time of possession throughout the game, it’s going to eventually limit the 49ers’ ability to run the ball–which is what they do best and what their entire offense is built around. It’s also going to put the ball into the turnover-prone hands of Garoppolo more often.

The last time these two met, Green Bay jumped out to a 17-0 lead, which ironically is one of the few instances they were able to do so this season. For much of the year, the Packers have been very slow to start, finishing the season ranking 25th in average first-quarter points scored.

On the flip side, and oftentimes behind strong second and third quarter performances, Green Bay is able to grab the lead — and frequently a multi-score lead — which results in them controlling the time of possession. In fact, they led the NFL in this category this season, controlling the ball for an average of 32:44 per game.

The 49ers’ defense has allowed just 21.2 points per game this season, the eighth fewest, they boast a strong pass rush and stout run defense with their defensive front, but Aaron Rodgers and Co. should have the opportunity to take advantage of the San Francisco cornerbacks–particularly Davante Adams.

Jumping out to a fast start and controlling the clock is obviously a good sign for this Green Bay Packers offense, but it will also provide the defense with some much-needed assistance as well.
