Marquette Basketball Takeaway No.1: Transfer Darryl Morsell provides a boost

Darryl Morsell transferred into Marquette as a “super-senior”–all players last season were granted another year of eligibility including seniors.

Morsell was already an accomplished defensive player during his four years at Maryland. He is the reigning Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year.

He is making an impact defensively as expected but his offensive impact has been a pleasant surprise.

He is off to 15.3 points per game start in Milwaukee. Morsell was not known for his three-point shot but he is hitting at a team-high 43.8% clip this season.

He has come up with big buckets when the Marquette Golden Eagles have needed it most. He had his own 7-0 run in Marquette’s recent win over Jackson State to start the second half after both went into the locker room tied at 29. His three-pointer and two layups allowed Marquette to pull away and cruise to an easy victory.

Morsell scored over 20 points in Marquette’s first four games including a career-high 26 points against New Hampshire. The Baltimore native never scored 20 points in four years at College Park, Maryland.

He has cooled off a bit after that four-game streak. He has scored just 21 points in his last three games. As evidenced against Jackson State, Morsell is the man Marquette will lean on to get big buckets throughout the season.
