Non-tendered free agents Brewers should pursue: Matthew Boyd, LHP

Matthew Boyd was the longest-tenured member of the Detroit Tigers before they decided to non-tender him earlier this week. As a starting pitcher, he could be a cheap option for Milwaukee to add to bolster the back of their starting rotation.

Boyd had his best season in 2019 when he was an All-Star candidate heading into the break. Although he struggled down the stretch and in 2020, he finally rebounded with a solid 2021 campaign before injuries cut it short. One of his biggest weaknesses has been allowing home runs which may caution Stearns and the Brewers in the hitter-friendly confines of American Family Stadium.

Boyd is also a great clubhouse presence, something Milwaukee certainly takes into account. He’s worked on improving his changeup over the last two years and that helped him keep the ball in the park more often in 2021. He had surgery on his arm in the Fall and there’s currently no timetable for his return. However, he speculated he should be ready to throw bullpen sessions sometime in Spring Training if his arm continues to feel this good.
