Packers’ unsung heroes: Jon Runyan

Sticking with the offensive line, Jon Runyan has been a very solid first-year starter for the Packers this season. His 66.0 overall PFF grade ranks 30th out of 75 eligible guards. That doesn’t seem to be great at first glance, but when you think about you’ll realize he’s a middle-of-the-pack starter at guard. That’s impressive for a guy who was a sixth-round pick in 2020 and didn’t start a game in his rookie season.

Playing every game at left guard this season, he’s at his best in pass protection. He’s worked well alongside the number of guys who have rotated to either side of him. Baktiari should return soon and Green Bay will have a tough decision to make about where to put Jenkins and then what to do with the guy in his spot. I think it’s most likely Jenkins slides to left guard and Runyan goes over to right guard to kick Royce Newman out of the starting lineup. Runyan deserves to continue starting.
