Brewers’ free agents to avoid: Starling Marte

Milwaukee could very well sign an outfielder this offseason despite rostering Cain, Yelich and Jackie Bradley Jr.–all of whom command high salaries. Cain has missed a number of games over the last few years and isn’t quite himself at this age, Bradley Jr. is coming off an awful season, and Yelich is now in a two-year slump.

That brings us to Starling Marte who is the best center fielder available in a very weak center field free-agent class. That alone will boost his value, but the Brewers shouldn’t fall into the trap.

At 33-years-old, his best days are clearly behind him. He could still have one or two solid years in him, but Milwaukee is already experiencing in real-time what happens when you sign a guy in his early 30s to a deal that takes him real close to 40. It’s not a good long-term value.
