Green Bay Packers Adjustment 3 – Amari Rodgers over Randall Cobb in the slot

At first, this might seem like a ridiculous proposition. Cobb has been a steady pass catcher for the Green Bay Packers this season and has caught four big touchdowns while Amari Rodgers has barely seen the field.

All of that is true, but think about the reason Cobb is in Green Bay in the first place and who’s been throwing him the ball. Aaron Rodgers has raved about Cobb and why he loves having him running routes so much, and they always know exactly what the other is thinking.

Jordan Love doesn’t have that connection with Cobb and probably has barely thrown to him at all because presumably, he’s always working with Rodgers and the first-team offense. Who does Jordan Love have at least somewhat of a connection with, though? Amari Rodgers, who he’s been throwing to in practice all season and threw to in the preseason.

Aaron Rodgers has said that he wanted Cobb to play that slot position because he understood all the intricacies of it that Amari couldn’t as a rookie. That seems to show that the slot battle isn’t really about talent; it’s about the little things in the mental game and technical differences. Is Cobb probably a better all-around receiver at this point? Yes, but better overall doesn’t always mean best for this particular quarterback.

None of this is to belittle what Cobb has done this season; he’s been a huge factor in a few of their big wins, or to say he won’t play at all. It just means Amari Rodgers might see his big chance at high usage because of the connection he’s built with Love this year.

So what do you think of these possible changes to the Green Bay Packers game plan? Is there anything else you’d change or would like to see them do Sunday? Let me know in the comments below.
